I'd like to say the 99/00 Civic Type R, but I think I have to concede that the Integra Type R of the same gen had a better engine.

R35 GTR. . . no wait. I would say Civic type R.

Maybe in the JDM market. But I would say the CRX we got over her was a bit lacking in the speed department. However, the platform is magnificent to build off of.

Integra Type-R. There's a reason why they're still highly desirable to this day.
Close second: Nissan Sentra SE-R.

Best sport compact from what year? Honestly, the market was thick with them until the turn of the century.
Hell, every couple of years I had to mentally expand my dream garage of affordable fun. Honda Anything Si, 323GTX, SE-R, I-Mark RS, SE-R again, MX3 (1.8L V6!), Impulse RS (AWD turbo yo!), Integra GSR then Type R... even Toyota made fun cars, not to be confused with the Paseo. I'm sure I'm forgetting some...

For serious, though, I've always wanted to try one. Corolla TTE Compressor hatchback. 1.8 VVT-i that's also found its way into the Exige back then ... 224 hp.

I can dig it. Shame we never got that over here!

I know you didn't get the car, as you didn't even get the model and/or body style. I wonder how much U.S. Corolla there is in my DD hatch.
On a slightly related note, Youtube failed me in my attempt to find easily accessible and greatly enjoyable footage. That said, there's some Hungaroring hooning in this if you skip the first 1.5 minutes.
Don't watch if supercharger whine annoys you. :D

does prelude count? I dont consider it a sports car. however it is sporty and compact.

The Prelude is actually one of the perfect examples of a Sport Compact. I love the Prelude, I think it looked great in all generations. The only issue I ever had with it was weight. I feel like the H series was an amazing engine, but got unjustly stuck haulin around 3100+ lbs. If they could've found a way to bring that down to ~2900 lbs, you wouldn't be able to keep me off of one.

you can get a prelude down to less than 2900lbs. Its not gonna look pretty inside, but it can be done.
And yeah, the weight was a compromise. They touted the car as luxury, yet sporty at the same time. But by doing both, they gave it a fantastic engine, and a fantastic interior that cost some weight.
But honestly, i dont mind the weight so much. The chassis certainly makes up for it in its rigidity. And its suspension compensates rather well.

I'm not saying it makes it any less of a good choice. I really would like one one day as a minor project/ DD. My work would be reduction of weight and replacement of its heavy parts. I'd say mild tuning to get it up to 210hp and replacement of panels and doing some interior work to get it to under 3k lbs.
